The most common upgrade decision. A King (76×80") is 16 inches wider than a Queen (60×80") with the same length. Each partner gets 38" of personal width on a King compared to 30" on a Queen. The tradeoff: you need a 12-foot-wide room for a King vs. 10 feet for a Queen, and King mattresses typically cost $150–$300 more.
A Queen (60×80") is 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a Full (54×75"). For couples, this means 30" per person instead of 27", which makes a real difference over a full night. Single adults benefit from the extra length too, especially anyone over 5'10". Both fit a 10×10' room, so the Queen is almost always the better choice unless budget is the deciding factor.
Same 38" width, but Twin XL adds 5 inches of length (80" vs. 75"). The XL length matches Queen and King mattresses, making it the right choice for teenagers who are still growing, college students, and any single sleeper over 5'10". The price difference is usually under $30.
Every mattress needs at least 24 inches of clearance on each accessible side and 36 inches at the foot for comfortable walking. A King needs a minimum 12-foot-wide room. A Queen fits rooms as small as 10×10'. If your room is borderline, the smaller size with generous clearance beats a larger mattress with cramped walkways.
For two adults, 30 inches of personal width per person (Queen) is the minimum comfortable threshold. If either partner is a restless sleeper, moves around at night, or runs warm, the extra 8 inches per person on a King makes a measurable difference in sleep quality. For single sleepers, anything above a Twin (38") is about comfort preference rather than necessity.
Upgrading from Queen to King typically adds $100–$300 to the mattress price. Sheets, mattress protectors, and comforters will cost more in the larger size too. If the room fits both sizes and budget allows, the larger size is almost always worth it. You will never regret having more sleeping space.
