How Tall Should My Bed Be?
The ideal bed height is 20-27 inches from floor to mattress top, depending on your height. Sitting on the edge, your feet should be flat on the floor with knees at a 90-degree angle. Use the calculator below to find your perfect bed height.

Bed Height by Frame Type
| Frame Type | Frame Height | + 10" Mattress | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Floor / Tatami | 0" | 10" total | Minimalist rooms, young adults, Japanese-style bedrooms |
| Platform Bed | 6-8" | 16-18" total | Modern look, shorter sleepers, no box spring needed |
| Standard + Box Spring | 12-16" | 22-26" total | Traditional setup, average-height adults, under-bed storage |
| Adjustable Base | 6-14" | 16-24" total | Couples with different preferences, back pain, reading in bed |
These heights assume a standard 10-inch mattress. Add 2-4 inches if you use a thicker mattress or topper. A 14-inch mattress on a standard frame with box spring reaches 28-30 inches, which is too tall for most people under 6'2".
Why Bed Height Matters
Ergonomics
The right bed height lets you get in and out of bed without strain. When sitting on the edge, your feet should rest flat on the floor with your knees bent at approximately 90 degrees. A bed that is too high forces you to jump down, while a bed that is too low requires extra effort from your knees and hips to stand up.
Accessibility
For older adults, people with mobility issues, or anyone recovering from surgery, bed height becomes critical. The ADA recommends a bed surface height between 20 and 23 inches for wheelchair transfers. If accessibility is a concern, aim for the lower end of the ideal range and consider a bed frame with grab bars.
Aesthetics
Bed height affects how a bedroom looks and feels. Low beds (under 18 inches) create a modern, grounded aesthetic and make small rooms appear larger. Standard-height beds (22-26 inches) provide under-bed storage and work with traditional bedroom furniture. Tall beds (over 28 inches) create a grand, hotel-like look but can overwhelm smaller rooms.
How to Adjust Your Bed Height
To Raise Your Bed
- Bed risers:Add 3-8 inches instantly. Plastic or wood risers slip under each leg. Cheapest option at $15-30 for a set.
- Box spring:Adds 7-9 inches. Standard box springs fit most metal and wood frames.
- Thicker mattress:Swap from an 8-inch to a 12-inch mattress for 4 extra inches without changing your frame.
- Mattress topper:Adds 2-4 inches and improves comfort. Memory foam toppers are the most popular choice.
To Lower Your Bed
- Remove box spring:Switch to a platform bed or bunkie board. Drops the height by 7-9 inches.
- Platform frame:Replace your standard frame with a low-profile platform bed (5-8 inches tall vs. 14-16 inches).
- Thinner mattress:An 8-inch mattress provides adequate support for most adults and saves 2-6 inches of height.
- Floor sleeping:Place the mattress directly on the floor. Ensure good airflow underneath to prevent moisture buildup.
